mom & i have always shared a love for fashion. when i was younger we’d spend hours shopping together on the weekends, gravitating toward the same designers and pieces. sometimes we’d separate to browse the racks alone and then find each other 15 minutes later, carrying the same items. it was hilarious! while my sis, anna, has always had her own sense of style (which is growing closer and closer to ours, btw!), mom and i have nearly identical tastes when it comes to clothing. this works out in my favor all the time since my mother frequently passes off gently worn hand-me-downs and impulse buys to me. 😉 anna and i recently discussed how we often pause before purchasing something and consider if mom would love it. that is the ultimate test.
as soon as my mother got engaged, i began to envision her ideal wedding ensemble. i initially had dreams of her coming down the aisle in a delicate claire pettibone gown. the vintage styling and timeless silhouettes seemed perfect for her. then i thought she might go with a more modern, sleek look. she actually bought an INCREDIBLE one-of-a-kind dolce and gabbana dress she was planning on wearing, but has since decided to save it for their at-home reception. so my mother decided that she wanted to rent a dress instead of purchase one for the actual wedding. perhaps she’s still traumatized from buying my monique lhuillier dress 3 years ago?? in my defense, i’ve worn it twice already! i still have dreams of chopping off the bottom to make it tea length and then giving it a quick tea-stain. i can totally see myself wearing it with a distressed jean jacket and cowboy boots. i’m serious!!!
a month or so ago, we headed to a posh koreatown bridal salon to try on a bunch of potential wedding gowns. i honestly did not love the ones she and the saleslady had pulled from the racks. they were lovely enough, but they looked completely wrong on her. they were too frilly, too beaded, too too. as i casually thumbed through the silks and satins between dress changes, i found it. there it was… THE DRESS. i knew before my mom put it on that it was the absolute perfect dress for her day. i have been sworn to secrecy and therefore cannot share photos of it, but suffice it to say that it is glorious. i’ll give you a couple of keyword hints: drop-waist, tiers, pleated ruffles and a brooch! 😉 she looked gorgeous in it and i was immediately moved to tears. she is going to be such a stunning bride!!!
a few items i *can* share with you are her beautiful, sparkling, swarovski-encrusted shoes and her whimsical vintage-styled pincushion hat + birdcage veil. adore!!! i am living vicariously through her with that veil. ugh. would it be too obnoxious if anna i wore purple veils?? 😉
here’s a blurry pic of her wedding shoes! they are just dripping with swarovski crystals…
the hat + veil are by erica koesler. in my honest opinion, mom wears it 10x better than this girl.
not to be outdone, mom’s fiancé purchased a custom tux from canali, bowtie, cummberbund, and shirt from neiman marcus and gorgeous valentino shoes. 😉 he is the most stylish man i’ve ever met, with a closet that rivals mom’s!! every weekend they are out shopping for nothing in particular, only to come home with piles of garment bags. what a life, right??
anna and i will escort our mother down the aisle and therefore opted to have custom dresses made. ok, okay… the truth is that i fell in love with a bridesmaid dress i saw on amelia lyon’s blog last year. i had saved the photos + the info for the seamstress all this time, waiting for the right opportunity to have the dress made. now it’s here!!
the inspiration dresses, as worn by amelia lyon + co. at her sister’s wedding last year! beautiful!
we will wear the stylish, sassy gowns in a rhubarb-colored dupioni silk, featuring 1/2 length sleeves, a high waist pencil skirt and contrasting pleats in the back. divine!! it’s pretty much a fab airline stewardess dress. 😉 i love the retro feel and can’t wait to re-wear it after the wedding. it’s perfect for a cocktail party or holiday dinner. anna and i will make our dresses slightly unique by using different color fabrics for the pleats (her will be champagne, and mine will be eggplant purple) and two types of lace trim.
i am currently trying to finish off my ensemble with the right pair of shoes. i have purchased 3 pairs (so far…) and hope to have a decision by tuesday. help me pick?
1) nine west purple satin slingbacks
2) marc by marc jacobs taupe + bronze open toe slingbacks
3) marc by marc jacobs taupe + bronze mary jane spectator slingbacks
i already have a favorite so i just want to hear some reader opinions. i will likely be selling the pair of MJ shoes i do not wear, so let me know if you’re an 8.5 or 9 that might be interested. 😉 i scored both pairs of MJ shoes during this past week’s ridiculous sale @ shopbop (sorry, it’s over!). they were both over 80% off original retail price when all was said and done. amazing!!
